Mehter or properly called Mehteran, is the name given to the music played by the Ottoman military bands. It derives its name from the word musician in Persian.
The notion of a military marching band began in the 16th century in the Ottoman Empire, and although it has been interrupted in mid 19th century, the adoption of the concept by the Turkish Armed Forces made sure the revival of the music.
The sound of this particular music is characterized by an often shrill sound combining bass drums, horns, bells, the triangle and cymbals. Although it is not a music style by itself, it has a special place in the Turkish Music history.

Lyrics of "Ceddin Deden"
Ceddin Deden, probably one of the most famous and well-known songs of the Mehteran, are as follows:
Ceddin, deden, neslin, baban
Hep kahraman Türk milleti
Orduların, pek çok zaman, vermiştiler dünyaya şan
Türk milleti!, Türk milleti!
Aşk ile sev hürriyeti
Kahret vatan düşmanını, çeksin o mel'un zilleti
